If there was a compilation album called INDIE 2017! Pocket Knife would be on it. New York’s Petite League have been putting out fuzzy, lo-fi tracks for years, but Pocket Knife (and to some extent Sun Dogs) shows a maturation that you might expect given the release of their third album. They are touring so be sure to catch them if they hit your city.
I’m guessing that many of you out there can identify with Geowulf’s Drink too Much. Its a track full of bad decisions, morning after regrets and dependency that somehow comes across as upbeat.
Dirty Projectors’ Cool Your Heart gets the remix treatment courtesy of Equiknox who does a fine job bringing out that pseudo reggae, tropical feeling that tends to wind its way through so many of their songs. Another example of less is more.
Whistling is indie gold. It’s undeniable. If you are thinking of starting an indie band you better make damn sure that one of you can whistle. Can’t play an instrument, but can whistle till the cows come home? Fine, we’ll work with it. Fortunately, Tracy Bryant did his homework. Check out Forever Certain to see for yourself.
Machine by Tender sounds like something we would have posted back in 2011. That’s not a bad thing mind you its just that everything about the track feels so familiar. The beat is catchy without being overbearing, the lyrics sparse, but do enough to keep the song moving along and there’s a chorus that you can sing along with. Honestly, its not rocket science folks.
I want to give a shout out to Zeve who put out an album recently to very little fanfare. That’s a shame because there’s a lot of promise in those tracks and while many of them do occupy a quieter, moodier corner it’s clear that they have the range to do something more upbeat should they want to. I hear a little AIR at times and Jose Gonzalez at others.
Finally, can Lizzo get some love please?
